ART THERAPY

What is it?

Art therapy is a practice that integrates both verbal and nonverbal expression. As essential as it is that we be able to put into words what our experiences have felt like, words simply are not feelings. Art has the capacity to get to that *feeling* place in a more expressive way than words.

It is a truly magical experience when we witness the ways in which the art process mirrors the themes and patterns we discuss and reflect on within the therapy process. There is something quite powerful about the insight gained through this process, as well as, the way in which the art process helps us begin to change, alter, and approach our selves in new, supportive, and aligning ways. Art reveals our inner most selves and offers us new understandings that we can then work through to adjust old ways of relating to ones self.

who is it for?

Art therapy is meant for everyone. No experience is needed in order to participate. Clients often share that they feel nervous to participate in the process, worrying they don’t have the skill or will get too caught up in how things look. That is all natural and may come up. Part of the experience is in learning to let go of all this noise and settle into what the art can offer you in terms of processing your emotions, understanding your sense of self better, and expressing how significant experiences have had an impact on you.

Art therapy is an optional part of the therapy process.

My approach to art therapy in one that is organic, letting the art show up in a way that is not pressured or demanding of you. This is something we can discuss further when getting to know one another.

Practices engaged within an art therapy practice can vary from drawing, painting, collage and even sculpture.
